IX FRIENDS OF RUI COSTA / HUSQVARNA
On Sunday 21 October, the town of Aguçadoura, in Póvoa de Varzim, woke up early in the morning to receive the Friends of Rui Costa Circuit / Husqvarna. The 9th edition of the 100% solidarity event was aimed at raising funds to help painting the church of the 2013 world champion’s hometown, which was greatly cherished by all the friends who wanted to contribute and support this cause.
Throughout the day, Rui Costa could feel the warmth of all, in particular of the thereabout 100 children who wanted to ride next to their idol and hero of the two wheels.
The youngsters had Rui’s company in the races of the cycling schools, among them the União Ciclista da Trofa, Efapel – Escola Ovar, BMC/Póvoa de Varzim/CDC Navais, Vito-Feirense-Blackjack, EC Arca de Noé - Gaia, Vilanovense-Duorep-Júlio Simões, ASC/Focus Team-Vila do Conde, Maiatos/Reabnorte, CC Avidos, Escolas ADSL RMC, CRC-Garbo and CC Barcelos.
The school races were preceded by a 20-kilometer ride, where the adults rode at a moderate pace with Rui Costa, followed by the cadets race. The day on the road ended with the open race of Cycling for All, where the champion returned to share the road with the fans. The day ended with the podium ceremony, including a giveaway draw.
The event was attended by the canoeing world champion Fernando Pimenta and several well-known cycling faces like Tiago Machado, Rui Oliveira, Bruno Pires, Joaquim Andrade and José Azevedo.
Among the autographs distributed by Rui Costa, he was delighted with another edition of his event: “Every year we aim to help an institution, in this case was to raise funds for the painting of the Aguçadoura’s church. I have to thank all the people present, who are with me all the time. I am always very happy to be here on this day with all these people who support me, who come to contribute and help.”
“For me, it’s very important to be able to come to my hometown and enjoy this day. I was born here; I spent all my youth existence here. It’s very difficult to come here during the competition season and so it’s great to be here with the people who saw me grow up and helped me to be who I am today. I am always very happy to do this event in my hometown and being able to help the church this year”, concluded Rui Costa.
