RUI COSTA - Tour de France

The recovery of the knee injury prevented Rui Costa of riding the Tour de Suisse, thus marking the return of the Portuguese leader of the UAE Team Emirates to the Tour de France, which takes place from 7 to 29 July. Rui Costa returns to the Tour for the 9th time in his career, where he has competed consecutively since 2009, with the exception of last year, and in which he has already won three stages: Super-besse Sancy in 2011, Gap and Le Grand Bornand in 2013.

The Tour has been the race of election for Rui Costa, in which he already left its signature with the victory of the three stages and also being distinguished with the combativity award in stages of different editions. In his last participation, in 2016, he was close to achieving another victory in the top of Andorra Arcalis, where his second place was within seconds of the victory.

The biggest world cycling race will cover a total of 3,351 kilometers in the 105th edition, punctuated by an individual time trial, a team time trial, eight flat stages, five hilly stages, six mountain stages and three altitude finishes (La Rosière, Alpe d'Huez, Saint-Lary-Soulan col du Portet). The Grand Départ is scheduled for Noirmoutier-en-l'Île and the big final awaits the peloton in Paris, in the traditional Champs Elysées.

Quotes by Rui Costa:

“Good morning friends. We have decided that it wasn’t time to compete, because the knee is still not in its normal state. The hardness of Switzerland could undermine all the recovery work I have been doing. The desire was to ride, but it could call into question the next race: the Tour!”
